MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th December, 2018) Claims that US President Donald Trump had tasked his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make illegal hush payments to women, who allegedly had affairs with Trump, may result in "impeachable offenses" if proven true, Jerry Nadler, a democratic representative from New York's 10th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, said.

On Friday, prosecutors said that Cohen, at Trump's request, had made hush payments to women who alleged they had affairs with Trump before he became president.

"They would be impeachable offenses. Whether they're important enough to justify an impeachment is a different question ... Certainly, they're impeachable offenses, because, even though they were committed before the President became President, they were committed in the service of fraudulently obtaining the office," Nadler said late on Sunday, as broadcast by CNN.

Last week, Cohen pleaded guilty to charges of lying to the US Congress about plans to build a Trump-branded real estate project in Moscow. Cohen's attorneys asked a judge for no jail time for their client, citing his cooperation in the probe into Russia's alleged role in the 2016 presidential election.

Moscow has repeatedly refuted accusations of meddling into US elections.
