US Congress Passes Stopgap Resolution to Avoid Government Shutdown

The US Senate and House of Representatives have passed legislation on Thursday that would allow to continue funding the government for the next two weeks in order to avert a shutdown.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th December, 2018) The US Senate and House of Representatives have passed legislation on Thursday that would allow to continue funding the government for the next two weeks in order to avert a shutdown.

The House passed by unanimous consent the bill that extends funding through December 21, while the Senate adopted the measure by voice vote.

The bill now heads to US President Donald Trump's desk for signature. The current spending for fiscal year 2019 is set to expire on Friday.

Before the continuing resolution expires in two weeks, the US Congress has to consider a $450 billion bill to fund several government agencies through September 30.

Trump is expected to meet with House Minority Leader Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Schumer next week to discuss government funding issues. An earlier meeting was postponed following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.

On November 23, Trump called on Republicans and Democrats in Congress to be united in coming up with a border security legislative package that will provide funding to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.

The Trump administration is seeking $5 billion to build the border wall, but opposition from Democrats could lead to a government shutdown.

Democrats and some Republicans do not support Trump's agenda on building the wall and have urged the US president to work with Congress on reforming the US immigration system.
