The Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday that it had held a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss the return of Syrian refugees to their homes.
MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th December, 2018) The Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday that it had held a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss the return of Syrian refugees to their homes."An exchange of views on the situation in Syria and the efforts of the Defense Ministry and the UNHCR to return Syrian citizens to the places of their pre-war residence has taken place. The meeting was held in a constructive manner, " the statement read.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) middle East and North Africa Bureau Director Amin Awad headed the agency's delegation, according to the statement.
The Russian side has been assisting Syria throughout the crisis, providing military and humanitarian aid, while also brokering ceasefire agreements.
As most of the heavy fighting in Syria is now over and the war is nearing its end, Damascus has started welcoming back Syrians who were forced to flee the armed conflict and seek asylum in other countries. According to the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees, over 56,000 refugees have returned to Syria from abroad since July.
