Iran Threat Below That of Russia, China, But Can Harm US Interests - CENTCOM Chief Nominee

The security threat posed by Iran is not on the level of China or Russia, which can seriously harm or destroy the United States, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, nominee to head the US Central Command (CENTCOM), said during his confirmation hearing in the US Senate on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th December, 2018) The security threat posed by Iran is not on the level of China or Russia, which can seriously harm or destroy the United States, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, nominee to head the US Central Command (CENTCOM), said during his confirmation hearing in the US Senate on Tuesday.

"It [the Iran threat] is below the threats of Russia, which can destroy us, and China, which can seriously injure us," McKenzie told senators.

However, McKenzie explained that Iran poses a long-term significant threat to the United States.

"It [Iran] has enough capabilities to harm the United States and its interests in the world," McKenzie said.

CENTCOM is a combatant command of the US Defense Department. The command was established in 1983 and its area of responsibility includes countries in West Asia, parts of North Africa and Central Asia, most notably Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq.

CENTCOM's current commander is US Army Gen. Joseph Votel.
