Lavrov, African Union Commissioner Discuss Settling Crises In Africa - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th December, 2018) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui discussed on Monday the fight against terrorism as well as settlement of crises in Africa, including those in South Sudan and the Central African Republic (car), the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Chergui has arrived in Moscow for a working visit.

"[The parties] discussed the issues of countering the spread of the terrorist threat and unblocking crises in Africa with a focus on the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Horn of Africa. The Russian party welcomed the mediation efforts of the African Union, undertaken in coordination with the United Nations in the interest of a rapid resolution of the Libyan conflict," the statement said.

The parties have also exchanged opinions about current issues of the further gradual development of the Russian-African relations with a focus on political cooperation between Russia and the African Union.

Chergui has also held consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
