World's Largest Hotel Chain Marriott Says 500Mln Guest Records Exposed in Massive Breach

Personal data of 500 million guests of Marriott International, the world's largest hotel chain, might have been stolen after the database of its subsidiary, Starwood, was hacked, the company said on Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th November, 2018) Personal data of 500 million guests of Marriott International, the world's largest hotel chain, might have been stolen after the database of its subsidiary, Starwood, was hacked, the company said on Friday.

"On September 8, 2018, Marriott received an alert from an internal security tool regarding an attempt to access the Starwood guest reservation database in the United States ... The company recently discovered that an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps towards removing it ... The company ... believes it contains information on up to approximately 500 million guests who made a reservation at a Starwood property," the company said in a statement.

The data on 327 million visitors included guest's Names, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport details, billing information, dates of birth, gender, hotel activity, as well as booking information.

The company noted it had reported the incident to law enforcement and continued to assist in the investigation. Marriott management also stated that guests could obtain information on the safety of their data by contacting the hotel chain online or by phone.

Marriott International is one of the leading hotel management companies. The company manages over 6,500 hotels in 127 countries. Its revenue in 2017 was estimated at $22 billion.
