NATO Foreign Ministers to Discuss Situation Around INF Treaty in December - Stoltenberg

NATO foreign ministers will discuss the situation around the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty during the talks in early December, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th November, 2018) NATO foreign ministers will discuss the situation around the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty during the talks in early December, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

"At the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in early December, we will assess the implications of Russia's actions for the INF Treaty and for our Alliance," Stoltenberg said in a statement on Thursday.

The NATO secretary general also stressed the readiness of the allies to continue negotiations with Russia on this issue.

"NATO has no intention to deploy new nuclear missiles in Europe. But as an Alliance, we are committed to the safety and the security of all our nations," he added.

Negotiations between NATO foreign ministers are scheduled for December 4-5 and will be held at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

The INF Treaty, signed by the United States and Soviet Union in 1987, bans ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 300 miles to 3,400 miles. According to the terms of the agreement, the treaty has an unlimited duration and each side can terminate it by providing compelling evidence to substantiate its decision.

In October, US President Donald Trump said that Washington intended to leave the INF Treaty, accusing Russia of violating it numerous times, while the Kremlin rejected the accusations, noting that Russia would be forced to take measures to ensure its security if the treaty was terminated by the United States.
