Canada Calls on Parties to Civil Unrest in Haiti to Work on Finding Solution - Ministers

Canada calls on all parties in the civil unrest in Haiti to cooperate to find a solution to the situation there, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a statement on Wednesday.

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th November, 2018) Canada calls on all parties in the civil unrest in Haiti to cooperate to find a solution to the situation there, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We call on all parties to work toward finding a solution," the statement said. "Canada is very concerned about the recent civil unrest in Haiti and is deeply saddened by the loss of life."

Freeland and Bibeau noted that as a long-standing partner of Haiti, Canada would cooperate with local actors to fight corruption, encourage transparency and promote the rule of law in the country.

Earlier this month, four Haitian customs officers and two civilians were killed in the town of Malpasse after engaging in an argument.

The killings took place as participants in nation-wide protests demand that President Jovenel Moise resign for not having investigated allegations of suspected embezzlement of funds in the Venezuelan PetroCaribe program, which provided Haiti with discounted oil prices.

Police said it has arrested some 20 people in the nationwide protests, but protest organizers said 11 people have been killed, 45 wounded and 75 arrested, according to local media.
