US-Led Coalition Willing To Assist UN Chemical Weapons Probe In Syria - Pentagon

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) The US-led international coalition is willing to assist the United Nations in its investigation of chemical weapons use in Syria, spokesman Col. Sean Ryan said in a press briefing on Monday.

"Of course, we are always willing to assist the UN for different needs," Ryan told reporters when asked if there has been any interaction between UN and coalition officials regarding facilitating the chemical weapons inspectors' trip.

He added, however, that those discussions have not taken place yet.

On Saturday, terror groups fired shells containing toxic gases on three neighborhoods in Syria's largest city of Aleppo, according to the Syrian news agency SANA.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said on Monday that it is considering sending chemical weapons inspectors to investigate an alleged poison gas attack by militants in Syria that wounded dozens.

OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias said the Syrian government has asked his organization to launch a probe and the watchdog has been in touch with UN officials to assess the security situation for a possible deployment of a fact-finding mission.

On Sunday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that Russian aircraft destroyed militant positions in northern Syria linked to the alleged gas attack.
