Argentina Renews Beef Supplies to US After 17-Year Ban From US Market - President

Argentina is renewing on Tuesday beef supplies to the United States after the former had received permission from the US Agriculture Department to relaunch its exports, Argentine President Mauricio Macri said.

BUENOS AIRES (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th November, 2018) Argentina is renewing on Tuesday beef supplies to the United States after the former had received permission from the US Agriculture Department to relaunch its exports, Argentine President Mauricio Macri said.

The United States stopped buying beef from the Latin American country following a major outbreak of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Argentina. The FMD was eradicated in the country in 2007.

"Great news! ... The approval of the US Agriculture Department was the last step necessary for Argentine beef to reenter the US market after our exports were banned in 2001," the president said via his Twitter account on Monday.

The president added that the lifted ban would open up huge opportunities for Argentine producers because the United States was the world's leading food and meat importer.

According to the Argentine Foreign Ministry, the country's beef supplies will be limited to 20,000 tonnes per year and all imports above the limit will be subject to 26.4 percent tariffs.
