Two policemen have been killed as a result of a shootout with Maoist militants in India's central state of Chhattisgarh, local media reported on Monday, citing the police.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th November, 2018) Two policemen have been killed as a result of a shootout with Maoist militants in India's central state of Chhattisgarh, local media reported on Monday, citing the police.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, a firefight, in which two local police officers and nine Maoist militants were killed, took place in Sukma district near the Kistaram police station.

The newspaper noted that the bodies were currently being removed, and that the death toll might increase.

The Maoists, widely known as the Naxalites or the Naxals, have been fighting the Indian government since the 1960s. They are far-left radical communists who support the Maoist ideology and conduct guerrilla warfare while hiding in some of India's densest forests, targeting security forces and government officials. They currently operate in a number of central and eastern states, including Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha.
