Nearly 90% of Ukrainians Believe Country's Officials 'Working for Personal Gain' - Poll

Nearly 90 percent of Ukrainians are not happy with the actions of their nation's authorities and believe that they are "working for personal gain" in order to protect their own interests, a poll by Sociopolis: Social, Political and Market Research organization showed on Thursday.

Ukrainians will go to the polls next spring to elect a new president. Parliamentary elections are expected no later than next fall.

"The vast majority of respondents [86.9 percent] perceive the current central government in Ukraine as people who are primarily working for personal gain to protect their own interests," the pollster said on Thursday.

Only 4.8 percent of respondents believed that government officials' Primary goal was to serve and protect the interests of people.

A total of 57 percent of respondents considered the conflict in the eastern region of Donbas to be the nation's main problem. Corruption in government bodies, high taxes on communal services and unemployment were also mentioned as major problems in Ukraine.

The poll was conducted on November 8-16 among a total of 2,403 respondents in 139 Ukrainians cities and settlements.
