UK's Biggest Trade Union Calls on Parliament to Vote Against Draft Brexit Agreement

Unite the Union, the United Kingdom's largest trade union, on Monday called on the nation's parliament to vote against the draft UK-EU agreement on Brexit.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th November, 2018) Unite the Union, the United Kingdom's largest trade union, on Monday called on the nation's parliament to vote against the draft UK-EU agreement on Brexit.

Following more than a year of tough talks on Brexit conditions, London and Brussels finally produced a draft agreement. Late on Wednesday, EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier revealed the contents of the provisional deal, which included agreements on citizens' rights, London's financial settlement, future trade relations, the transition period the Irish border.

"MPs should hold their nerve, act for the people and vote down her plan. [Prime Minister Theresa May] must, in such circumstances, recognize she has lost the authority to govern and resign," Unite the Union's General Secretary Len McCluskey wrote in an article in the Huffington Post media outlet.

He pointed out that the proposed Brexit plan did not address any of the public's concerns over Brexit.

"Theresa May's plan addresses none of the concerns about Brexit and mitigates none of the risks. It only answers the question as to how low a common denominator can go. The idea that the only choice is between this bad deal or no deal is preposterous and an insult to the country. It is an argument that appeals only to her ungovernable Party, which has dragged the country to the brink," McCluskey said.

According to the trade union's head, the "shambolic" deal would provide the United Kingdom with no control over its laws, money or borders.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum in June 2016 and is expected to do so by late March 2019.
