Egypt Urges Israel to Stop Military Operations in Gaza - Foreign Ministry

Egypt expressed deep concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip and warned the conflicting sides against negative consequences of violence in the Palestinian enclave as well as calling on Israel to stop military operations, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th November, 2018) Egypt expressed deep concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip and warned the conflicting sides against negative consequences of violence in the Palestinian enclave as well as calling on Israel to stop military operations, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.

Violence between Israel and the Hamas militant group running Gaza erupted on Monday after a Hamas commander was killed in a covert Israeli operation. An Israeli officer also died in the ensuing gunfight. The Israeli military said it had intercepted over 100 out of the 460 rockets fired from Gaza over the past day, and attacked 160 militants' targets in the enclave. Both sides have suffered casualties. On Tuesday, the intensity of the exchange of blows significantly decreased and reports emerged that a new ceasefire agreement was being prepared under the mediation of Egypt and the United Nations.

"Egypt expressed deep concern over the escalation of the situation in the Gaza Strip, which resulted in casualties, and warned against negative consequences of the vicious circle of violence on the occupied Palestinian territories ... The statement again calls on Israel to immediately stop all military operations," the ministry said.

The ministry added that it is extremely important to avoid everything that leads to further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and postpones the achievement of peace and securing rights of the Palestinian people.

Over 50 Israeli civilians were injured and seven Palestinians were killed as a result of the latest wave of violence.
