Flow of Migrants Into Libya Declined Substantially, Especially From West Africa - Salame

The flow of migrants arriving in Libya has declined considerably, especially of those coming from West Africa, Ghassan Salame, the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, said on Tuesday.

PALERMO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th November, 2018) The flow of migrants arriving in Libya has declined considerably, especially of those coming from West Africa, Ghassan Salame, the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, said on Tuesday.

"The number of illegal migrants in Libya who are in detention centers is 34,000. The number of illegal migrants who are on the territory of Libya as a whole is 700,000 ... What is important is that the flow [of migrants] coming into Libya has declined substantially, especially from West Africa, not so much from East Africa," Salame said at the end of Palermo Conference for Libya.

Salame stressed that the UN mission continued to visit detention centers to make sure that migrants are provided with basic needs and health service.

The two-day conference in Palermo was launched on Monday, bringing together a number of politicians from Libya and other countries.

Libya has been in turmoil since the overthrow and killing of its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country is divided between two governments, with the eastern part controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA), and the western part governed by the UN-backed Government of National Accord, led by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.
