As many as 198 people have been killed in Nicaragua since waves of anti-government protests began in April, the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th November, 2018) As many as 198 people have been killed in Nicaragua since waves of anti-government protests began in April, the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

"As a result of criminal actions 198 people have been killed, 22 of whom were officers of the national police, and 1,240 people have been injured, 401 of whom were members of the national police who received gunshot wounds as a result of protests," the press release published Monday on Nueva Radio Ya website read.

According to the press release, this series of protests are "an attempted coup by political groups disguised as non-governmental organizations related to organized crime with funding from abroad."

The document stressed that infrastructure had greatly suffered during this period, causing almost $1 billion in damage to the country's economy.

Turmoil erupted in Nicaragua on April 18 when people took to the streets to protest unpopular social security reforms announced by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. After several days of protests, Ortega canceled the reforms, but the protests have nevertheless continued.
