UPDATE - EU Refuses To Accept UK Prime Minister's Key Initiative On Brexit - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th November, 2018) The European Union refused to accept the key initiative of UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Brexit - creation of an independent mechanism to oversee the UK withdrawal from the customs union - local media reported on Sunday.

Last week, May's spokesman said that there was a "good progress" in the UK-EU talks on the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the bloc and 95 percent of the future Brexit agreement had already been settled.

According to The Sunday Times newspaper, May hoped to unite her cabinet by settling the differences with the European Union through the initiative on the independent mechanism.

However, the European Union insists that any arbitration can be carried out only via the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The newspaper also reported that four ministers from May's cabinet, who are opposing the no-deal Brexit, were on the brink of resignation.

At the same time, the Labour Party vowed to mobilize all political parties to prevent May's government from withdrawing the country from the European Union without a deal.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum in June 2016 and is expected to do so by late March 2019, while there are still certain stumbling blocks that impede talks, namely, the Irish border and the post-Brexit UK-EU economic relations, making a no-deal scenario of Brexit a possibility.
