French Government Vows Action After Anti-Semitism Spikes 69%

The French government said Friday it would act against anti-Semitism after a spike in incidents targeting Jews was recorded in the country this year.

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th November, 2018) The French government said Friday it would act against anti-Semitism after a spike in incidents targeting Jews was recorded in the country this year.

"After low rates of the past two years, the number of anti-Semitic acts rose considerably in the first nine months of 2018. This is unacceptable! The government cannot stay indifferent," it tweeted.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe unveiled the figure in a speech marking 80 years since attacks on Jewish homes and stores across Nazi Germany in 1938. It became known as Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, in reference to smashed windows.

"Every act of violence against our fellow citizens because they are Jews resonates in us as a sound of broken glass," Philippe said on his Facebook page.

He said his government would propose a bill that would force social media to remove online hate content faster and would advocate for it at the European Parliament next year.
