Afghan Delegation Lands In Moscow Ahead Of Peace Talks

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th November, 2018) A delegation of the Afghan High Peace Council, a group set up by former Afghan leader Hamid Karzai to mediate with the Taliban, has landed in the Russian capital ahead of peace talks in the so-called Moscow Format.

The Taliban said it would send a five-member delegation. Delegates from other countries are also expected to attend, as will Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov who is to address the gathering at a closed-door event on Friday.

The Afghan Foreign Ministry said the council did not represent the government of Afghanistan. Sibghat Ahmadi, a spokesman of the ministry, said however that Moscow talks would hopefully lead to direct negotiations between the militant group and Kabul.
