US National Sentenced To 22 Years For Attempting To Kill Diplomat In Mexico - Justice Dept

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th November, 2018) A US national was sentenced to more than two decades in prison for attempting to murder an American diplomat in Mexico, the Justice Department said in a press release.

"A US national and former medical student was sentenced to 264 months in prison for the 2017 shooting of a US diplomat stationed at the US Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico," the release said on Wednesday.

Zia Zafar, 33, of California, the release added, previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder of an internationally protected person. Zafar admitted to targeting the vice consul based on earlier surveillance before he shot the diplomat in the chest at close range.

The unnamed US diplomat survived, according to the release, but the bullet remains lodged in his spinal column, deemed too dangerous to remove.
