MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th November, 2018) The United States has urged the Ukrainian authorities to find and punish those responsible for the murder of councilor in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson Kateryna Handzyuk, who campaigned against corruption, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Monday.
"The U.S. extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of #KaterynaHandziuk. Attacks on #Ukraine's civil society must stop. Those responsible for ordering and committing this horrific attack must be brought to justice," Nauert said on Twitter.
Handzyuk, 33, was severely burned in an acid attack on July 31. She succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, leading police to reclassify the case as a contract killing. Police initially opened an inquiry into an attempted murder. According to the head of the National Police of Ukraine Serhiy Knyazev, six suspects have already been detained as part of the investigation, while four of them were arrested.
