Russian Railways company jointly with the Railway Union of Cuba plan to modernize over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of railroads in Cuba, the documents prepared for the Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel's visit to Moscow revealed.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd November, 2018) Russian Railways company jointly with the Railway Union of Cuba plan to modernize over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of railroads in Cuba, the documents prepared for the Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel's visit to Moscow revealed.

Diaz-Canel arrived in Moscow on Thursday evening. This is his first visit to Russia in his current capacity. Earlier in the day, the Cuban leader held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"A joint work is underway to restore Cuba's transport infrastructure. Russian Railways and the Railway Union of Cuba are forming a program for the deep modernization of the Cuban railway network [over 1,000 kilometers]. The signing of a large-scale agreement is on the agenda," the documents said.

The Russian government earlier approved a draft agreement on cooperation between Russia and Cuba in restoring the republic's railway infrastructure, and the relevant decree signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was published on the government's website on Tuesday.

Russian bank loans and funds from a special account through which Cuba is paying its debt to Russia were noted as possible sources to finance this project.

Diaz-Canel replaced Raul Castro as the new leader of Cuba after the country's National Assembly of People's Power approved his candidacy for the position of the president of the Cuban Council of State in April.
