UNSC Permanent Members' Envoys to Yemen Must Play Role in Settlement - Russian Ambassador

Ambassadors of Russia and other UN Security Council permanent members to Yemen should play an important role in the Yemeni settlement process, Russian Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Dedushkin told Sputnik

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd November, 2018) Ambassadors of Russia and other UN Security Council permanent members to Yemen should play an important role in the Yemeni settlement process, Russian Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Dedushkin told Sputnik.

On Wednesday, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths called on all sides to the conflict in the war-torn country to seize the opportunity to restart peace talks, saying he hopes to resume the negotiations within one month.

"I hope that Russia representatives will be present at the negotiations within the group of 19 sponsors of the political process, just like at the previous round of negotiations in Geneva. An important role should be played by ambassadors of five permanent members of the UN Security Council to the Republic of Yemen, who held regular meeting in Geneva actively assisting Griffiths," Dedushkin said.

The Russian diplomat noted that one of European countries was likely to host the next round of consultations on Yemen.

UN-mediated talks scheduled for early September in Geneva collapsed when Houthi representatives refused to attending, claiming that the Saudi-led coalition refused to guarantee their safety. The coalition claims the Houthis were given a green light to leave, but failed to use the opportunity.

The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out military operations in Yemen in support of the country's government, which lost control of the capital of Sanaa and much of Western Yemen to Houthi rebels in 2015.

Both sides have been accused of war crimes and a recent UN report cited Saudi-led air strikes as the Primary cause of more than 16,000 civilian deaths in three years of fighting.
