Mexican Supreme Court Opens Way For Legal Recreational Marijuana Use - Reports

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st November, 2018) The Mexican National Supreme Court of Justice has upheld requests for using marijuana for recreational purposes in two legal actions, bringing the number of similar cases to five, which opens the way for the legalization of recreational cannabis use in the Latin American country, local media reported.

The court ruling created a binding precedent which also meant that the cannabis legalization issue should be considered by the Mexican parliament, the Economista news outlet reported on Wednesday.

The lawmakers upheld the use of marijuana for medical purposes in late 2016, a year after the Supreme Court allowed four individuals to use marijuana for recreational purposes. However, the government subsequently specified that the decision concerned only the four individuals in question.

Mexico's outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto was initially against the legalization of marijuana use, but subsequently initiated a broad public discussion, including sociologists, medics and academics, on this issue.
