Turkish Ruling Party's Deputy Chair Believes Istanbul Summit Should Lead to Peace in Syria

The upcoming summit of Russian, French, German and Turkish leaders in Istanbul should lead to a peaceful settlement in this country and ensure the beginning of the constitutional process, Deputy Chairman of the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party Cevdet Yilmaz said Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) The upcoming summit of Russian, French, German and Turkish leaders in Istanbul should lead to a peaceful settlement in this country and ensure the beginning of the constitutional process, Deputy Chairman of the Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party Cevdet Yilmaz said Friday.

The leaders of the four countries will hold a summit on Syria on Saturday. They are expected to review the military situation, the process of the establishment of the constitutional committee and to issue a joint statement. Moreover, the structure of the draft constitution and the road map on Syria could be coordinated, according to Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin.

"We hope that this will yield results. The international community welcomed the activities of Russia and Turkey on a peaceful settlement," Yilmaz said at a meeting with leader of Russia's LDPR party Vladimir Zhirinovsky in Moscow.

The agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Idlib became an important step in the Syrian settlement process, preventing hostilities and stopped new flows of refugees, he added.

Turkey hosts about 3.5 million refugees from Syria, and about a million from Iraq and Afghanistan, Yilmaz noted.

"We do not want to see an increase in this flow, therefore, we support a political solution to the conflict in Syria. We would like the work at the constitutional level to be conducted. We want elections to be held there, and a government to be elected, with which we can establish dialogue and cooperation. We want the reconstruction of Syria and reconciliation of the warring parties," he added.

Putin and Erdogan have been playing a key role in the settlement of the Syrian crisis. In 2017, Moscow and Ankara along with Iran reached an agreement on the creation of de-escalation zones in Syria, while in September, the Russian and Turkish leaders agreed to demilitarize the Idlib de-escalation zone.
