Gazprom Says TurkStream Pipeline's Offshore Part 95% Ready, Power of Siberia 95.5% Ready

Russian gas giant Gazprom said on Friday that it had completed construction of the offshore part of the TurkStream gas pipeline by 95 percent and build 95.5 percent of the Power of Siberia pipeline.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) Russian gas giant Gazprom said on Friday that it had completed construction of the offshore part of the TurkStream gas pipeline by 95 percent and build 95.5 percent of the Power of Siberia pipeline.

"The construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline is underway. To date, 1,775 kilometers [1,103 miles] of pipes have been laid in total along both lines, which is 95 percent of the total length of the offshore section of the pipeline. A total of 2,064 kilometers of pipes were welded and laid in the Power of Siberia gas pipeline section from Yakutia to the Russian-Chinese border, which is 95.5 percent of its length," the company said in a statement.

The construction of the Power of Siberia's double-thread underwater section at Amur River crossing is 90 percent ready, while the construction of the Atamanskaya border compressor station continues, the statement said.

TurkStream's facilities on the Russian coast near the city of Anapa have been built and will be commissioned before 2019, while the construction of a receiving terminal in Turkey near the village of Kiyikoy is underway, the company said.

In 2014, Gazprom signed a 30-year framework agreement with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) for annual deliveries of 38 billion cubic meters (1,341 trillion cubic feet) of Russian gas through the eastern route pipeline, formally known as the Power of Siberia. Gas supplies via the pipeline are set to begin on December 20, 2019. The pipeline will also transport gas from production centers in Irkutsk and Yakutia to consumers in Russia's Far East.

The TurkStream project was announced in late 2014 by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his state visit to Turkey. In October 2016, Moscow and Ankara signed an intergovernmental agreement envisioning the construction of two underwater legs of the pipeline in the Black Sea. Gazprom started the construction of the TurkStream offshore pipeline on May 7. The pipeline will have a capacity of 15.75 billion cubic meters (556.2 billion cubic feet) per year. One line is expected to supply natural gas solely for consumption in Turkey. The second string will transport gas to southern and southeastern European countries through Turkey, and is scheduled for completion in 2019.
