Opposition SNC Head Says France, Germany Became Key Actors on Syria in Non-Military Issues

France and Germany have become main actors on Syria in non-military issues due to their "leverage" on the issues relevant to refugees, reconstruction, and other fields, head of the opposition Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) Nasr Hariri said Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) France and Germany have become main actors on Syria in non-military issues due to their "leverage" on the issues relevant to refugees, reconstruction, and other fields, head of the opposition Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) Nasr Hariri said Friday.

"Now, after the reduction in military action, yes, they [France, Germany] are [main actors], because they have the leverage on the refugee issue and on the reconstruction issue and sanctions and accountability. So they are the main actors now. In the military issues, I don't think so. But in other issues, yes," Hariri told reporters, when asked if he believed France and Germany to be main actors on the Syrian settlement.

Earlier in the day, Hariri said that the upcoming summit of France, Germany, Russia and Turkey in Istanbul would be "very important, because it contains the four main actors on Syria."

The leaders of the four countries will hold a summit on Syria on Saturday. They are expected to review the military situation, the process of the establishment of the constitutional committee and to issue a joint statement. Moreover, the structure of the draft constitution and the road map on Syria could be coordinated, according to Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin.
