US Has Not Decided to Deploy Ground-Based Missiles in Europe Yet - Bolton

The United States has not made a decision on deploying ground-based missiles in Europe able to quickly reach Moscow following possible Washington's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd October, 2018) The United States has not made a decision on deploying ground-based missiles in Europe able to quickly reach Moscow following possible Washington's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said on Monday.

Bolton told Russia's Kommersant newspaper that one of the inconsistencies of the INF treaty was that it allowed the deployment of sea-based cruise missiles capable of reaching Moscow in the Baltic Sea, but at the same time prohibited the deployment of missiles with the same range on the Polish coast.

Bolton stressed that Washington was mostly concerned over the global impact of Russia's violation of the INF treaty, and over Russia's possible actions in Europe.

The INF treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and the United States in December 1987, and required the parties to destroy their ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (from 310 to 3,417 miles).
