Top German Diplomat Lauds Next Week's Syria Summit With Participation of Russia, Turkey

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Friday praised next week's Syrian peace summit with participation of Russia, Turkey and France as a rare attempt to tackle the crisis together.

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th October, 2018) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Friday praised next week's Syrian peace summit with participation of Russia, Turkey and France as a rare attempt to tackle the crisis together.

"It is a very good development as it will bring the two sides together for the first time - they are Russians and Turks, on one side... and the French and us on the other," he said.

Istanbul will host the four-party meeting on October 27. The German diplomat said it would focus on an agreement reached by the Russian and Turkish presidents in Sochi in September that envisaged the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Syria's province of Idlib.

Maas warned any step away from the agreement risked a new humanitarian disaster. The deal was to remove terrorist groups and their heavy weapons from an area separating Syrian government forces and armed opposition.
