"It is shameful that President Trump is threatening to deploy the US military to further his pre-election, anti-refugee agenda," Human Rights First Refugee Protection Program Director Eleanor Acer said in the release. "The only crisis at the southern border is a political one of his own making."
The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the US military from conducting civilian law enforcement activities beyond military bases in the United States. Therefore Trump's idea is illegal as well as unwise, Acer continued.
Trump's "suggestion that he will cut aid that is critical to addressing the rights abuses causing people to flee is both short sighted and counterproductive. It will only lead more people to flee their countries of origin," Acer said.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump said in a Twitter message that he was considering ordering the US armed forces to shut down the US land border with Mexico to end a wave of migrants entering the United States from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
