Russia-Turkey Idlib Memorandum Being Implemented, But Minor Hiccups Likely - Kremlin

The Russia-Turkey memorandum on Syria's Idlib is being generally implemented, but one can hardly expect that it will be a smooth process without minor difficulties, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) The Russia-Turkey memorandum on Syria's Idlib is being generally implemented, but one can hardly expect that it will be a smooth process without minor difficulties, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

On September 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in the Russian resort city of Sochi and signed an agreement on setting up a 9-12 mile demilitarized zone in Idlib along the contact line of the armed opposition and the government forces by October 15. The agreement was aimed at prevention of the possible offensive of the Syrian government's troops in the province of Idlib, which remains the last stronghold of insurgency.

"In general, according to the information that we receive from our military, the memorandum is being implemented, and the military are satisfied with the way the Turkish side and our Turkish colleagues work in this regard. Undoubtedly, one should not expect that everything will go smoothly, without hiccups, but the work is underway," Peskov told reporters, when asked how the Kremlin assessed the implementation of the memorandum.
