UN Chief Says World Needs to Know Truth About Fate of Saudi Journalist

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed a belief on Saturday that the international community needs to know the truth about the fate of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was reportedly murdered in the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th October, 2018) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed a belief on Saturday that the international community needs to know the truth about the fate of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was reportedly murdered in the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

Khashoggi, who has been working for The Washington Post newspaper and has been known for his criticism of Saudi authorities, went missing in Turkey on October 2. According to his fiancee, Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul and never came out. The Washington Post reported on Friday that the Turkish authorities had shared with the United States audio and video recordings suggesting the journalist had been murdered in the Saudi consulate.

"We need to have a strong request for the truth ... we need to know exactly what happened ... who is responsible. And of course when we see the multiplication of this kind of situations, I think we need to find ways in which accountability is also demanded," Guterres told BBC in an interview.

UN special rapporteurs on enforced disappearances, freedom of speech and mass executions have already called on Saudi Arabia and Turkey to carry out independent investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.

Saudi Arabia has denied all allegations, saying that the journalist went missing after he had left the consulate and that Riyadh was assisting the Turkish authorities in their efforts to locate the journalist. According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Saudi Arabia allowed the Turkish authorities to search the consulate building.
