Pompeo Holds Call With Canada's Freeland Over New Trade Deal, N. Korea - US State Dept.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th October, 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland during a phone call on Wednesday shared praise for their respective nations plus Mexico for the recently concluded tri-nation trade agreement, the State Department said in a press release.

"The two congratulated the US, Canada, and Mexico teams on reaching a successful conclusion to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement," the release said.

In addition, Pompeo thanked Canada for maintaining sanctions on North Korea, according to the release.

The latest trade deal replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which had been criticized by President Donald Trump for prompting US companies to close American factories and move production to Mexico and Canada. Although well received in the United States, the Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) said the new trade deal limits Canadian farmers' ability to make products for export while giving foreigners too much market access.
