Hungarian Foreign Ministry Summons Ukrainian Ambassador Amid Dual Citizenship Row- Reports

Ukrainian Ambassador to Budapest Liubov Nepop was summoned to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry over "a death list" of Hungarians in Ukraine who allegedly had dual citizenship, media reported on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) Ukrainian Ambassador to Budapest Liubov Nepop was summoned to the Hungarian Foreign Ministry over "a death list" of Hungarians in Ukraine who allegedly had dual citizenship, media reported on Wednesday.

According to Hungary Today, the so-called death list was recently published on "an extremist Ukrainian website" and included about 300 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine who were believed to have dual citizenship, which is banned under Ukrainian law. Previous experience has shown that people on such lists could be harassed and even become victims of murder, the media cited the Hungarian parliamentary state secretary, Levente Magyar, as saying.

Budapest also expressed to the ambassador its concern about military installations Ukraine was reportedly setting up next to the Hungarian border, the media added.

Last week, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expelled a Hungarian consul working in the Ukrainian city of Berehove after reports emerged claiming that the consulate had been issuing Hungarian passports to Ukrainians who were ethnic Hungarians. Budapest responded by expelling one of Ukraine's consuls.

The diplomatic row over suspected dual citizenship is another development in the months-long standoff between the two countries that was sparked by Ukraine's new education law. The legislation, adopted last September, stripped national minority children in Ukraine of the right to study in their native language.
