European Commission Praises Sofia for Quick Arrest of Journalist Marinova Murder Suspect

European Commission President Jean Claude-Juncker praised on Wednesday the Bulgarian authorities for their effort that made possible the quick arrest of the suspect linked to the murder of Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) European Commission President Jean Claude-Juncker praised on Wednesday the Bulgarian authorities for their effort that made possible the quick arrest of the suspect linked to the murder of Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova.

On the night into Wednesday, 21-year-old Bulgarian national Severin Krasimirov was detained in Germany on suspicion of raping and murdering 30-year-old Marinova, administrative director and host of the Bulgarian broadcaster TVN. While the murder was committed in the northern Bulgarian city of Ruse on Saturday, Krasimirov is believed to have fled to Germany in order to avoid criminal charges in Bulgaria. He will soon face trial in Germany before being extradited to Bulgaria.

"President Juncker welcomes the swift and intensive efforts by Prime Minister Borissov and the Bulgarian authorities who in close cooperation with law enforcement agencies from other EU Member States successfully arrested the suspected murderer of journalist Victoria Marinova," the European Commission said in a statement.

The European Commission has offered its condolences to Marinova's family and friends.

Krasimirov may face a life sentence for the deliberate murder committed with extreme atrocity, according to the Bulgarian prosecution.

While all the possible versions of the murder are currently being studied, the Bulgarian law enforcement agencies said promptly after the murder that it might have been related to Marinova's investigative work, with the last issue she worked on being the scandal around theft of money from EU funds.
