Faisal Raza Abidi arrested in contempt of court case

Abidi, during the programme aired on the private TV channel, had used derogatory language against a former top judge.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 10th October, 2018) Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former senator Faisal Raza Abidi was arrested from the premises of Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The former PPP Senator was booked by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Secretariat Police for using abusive and defamatory language in a television interview and at social media against the judges.

An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) had last week approved the interim bail application of the former senator till October 11 in an alleged defamation case registered in Secretariat Police Station where Abidi used abusive language against the judiciary.

A case was registered against him under Sections 228, 500, 34 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Anti Terrorism Act (ATA) against the complaint of Public Relations Officer, Supreme Court on September 19.

The Judge of the ATC Kausar Abbas Zaidi after listening the case had granted pre-arrest bail to Faisal Raza Abidi till October 11 against surety bond of Rs1,00,000.

The Supreme Court had in April directed the police to arrest Faisal Raza Abidi and produce him before it in the contempt of court case.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, also issued a contempt of court notice to a private tv channel.

Abidi, during the programme aired on the private TV channel, used derogatory language against a former top judge. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had banned the channel's programme for three months, besides imposing fine of Rs one million.
