MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th October, 2018) The Russian Research Institute of Precision Machine Building (TsNIITochMash) has started works on creation of a trial model of a self-propelled artillery system Lotus for the Russian Armed Forces' Airborne Troops, TsNIITochMash Director General Albert Bakov told Sputnik in an interview.

"The joint-stock company TsNIITochMash is currently working on a number of promising projects that have been designed for the benefit of the Russian Defense Ministry. One of these project is the Lotus, set to replace the Airborne Troops's 120 mm self-propelled weapons NONA-S. We are currently at the stage of first trial model creation and preliminary trials conduction," Bakov said.

In October 2016, TsNIITochMash told Sputnik that the NONA-S mobile artillery units would be replaced with the Lotus, although it had been scheduled before to replace them with the Zauralets-D self-propelled gun. Compared with the Zauralets-D, the Lotus has a greater shooting range, while it also possesses more advanced high-precision ammunition.
