The United States is ready to assist the Bulgarian authorities in the investigation into murder of the country's journalist Viktoria Marinova, the US Embassy in Bulgaria said Tuesday in a statement.

Marinova, the 30-year-old administrative director and host of the regional broadcaster TVN, was raped and killed in the northern Bulgarian city of Ruse on Saturday.
"The US Embassy in Sofia expresses shock and outrage regarding the murder of journalist Victoria Marinova. We call for a thorough investigation which results in the perpetrator/s being held accountable. We are ready to offer assistance to authorities if needed to help bring the perpetrator/s to justice," the statement read.
While the Bulgarian authorities do not rule out any possible version, local law enforcement agencies believe that the murder might be related to Marinova's investigative work, with the last issue she worked on being the scandal around theft of money from EU funds. Earlier on Tuesday, the Bulgarian police detained a suspect, who is a Romanian citizen also having a Moldovan citizenship.
