RPT - Greece Insists On Dublin Regulation Revision To Relief 1st-Entry States - Deputy Minister

RHODES (Greece) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 09th October, 2018) HODES (Greece), October 9 (Sputnik), Ksenia Shakalova - The Dublin RHODES (Greece) (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th October, 2018) egulation, which gives EU member states the right to deport migrants to the first country of entry to the bloc, should be revised before year-end, if possible, in order to ease the burden of such countries as Greece, Italy and Spain, Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos told Sputnik in an interview.

On Tuesday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called on the EU member states to agree on a reform for the Dublin Regulation by the end of this year.

"So it is completely necessary to have a global solution [to migration issue], if possible, within this year, 2018, that would be accompanied by very thorough revision of the Dublin Treaty ... And the reform of the Dublin agreement is necessary because, as it is now ... all the burden goes to the first entry countries, like Greece, Italy and Spain," Katrougalos indicated.

Since 2015, Europe has been experiencing its worst migration crisis in recent history, struggling to accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing hostilities in the middle Eastern and North African countries. Greece, Italy and Spain have become the first-entry countries for thousands of new undocumented arrivals. In May 2016, the European Commission adopted a package of proposals to amend the Dublin Regulation and introduce a fairer migrant resettlement system.
