"The Secretary congratulated Abd al-Mahdi on his designation as Prime Minister ... and said he looked forward to working closely with him to help his government deliver stability, security and prosperity for all Iraqis," State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in the readout.

Mahdi, a 76-year-old economist, was selected as prime minister on Tuesday by newly elected President Barham Salih. The new prime minister had previously served as vice president, finance minister and oil minister under outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
