US Using Clean Sport Rhetoric for Unfair Competition - Russian Foreign Ministry

The US anti-doping agency uses the global drive for clean sport to attack Russia, while shielding its own tainted athletes, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th October, 2018) The US anti-doping agency uses the global drive for clean sport to attack Russia, while shielding its own tainted athletes, Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Thursday.

The global anti-doping watchdog, WADA, last month lifted Russia's three-year suspension over claims of a state-run doping scheme. The US regulator, USADA, called the vote a "devastating blow" to clean athletes.

"The US is the driving force behind constant attacks on Russia over its alleged state-run doping program. US functionaries have effectively rejected the decision of the WADA executive committee," she said. "This is cheating ... US claims of leading the clean sport movement seem to be used for unfair competition."

Zakharova accused USADA of helping its Mixed Martial Arts star Jon Jones, who reduced his initial four-year suspension for using steroids in 2016 down to 15 months after cooperating with USADA, whose arbitrators eventually ruled the fighter did not use turinabol deliberately.
