UK Trade Union Calls on Gov't to Put Interests of Car Industry Ahead of Brexit Ambitions

Unite the Union, the biggest UK trade union, on Tuesday called on the country's government to put the interests of the car manufacturing industry ahead of political ambitions.

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd October, 2018) Unite the Union, the biggest UK trade union, on Tuesday called on the country's government to put the interests of the car manufacturing industry ahead of political ambitions.

The statement was made after remarks by Toyota's European chief Johan van Zyl, who warned that in case of the UK-EU failure to reach the Brexit agreement, the company will reduce its investments in the United Kingdom.

"Tory ministers need to stop gambling with people's jobs and put the livelihoods of the UK's car workers and those in the supply chain ahead of their own self-interested political ambitions," Unite the Union's assistant general secretary Tony Burke said, as quoted by the union's statement.

The trade union called on the UK government to reach a Brexit deal that will protect the country's jobs and prevent introduction of tariffs between the United Kingdom and the European Union.

"The message is clear from manufacturers and the workers who have worked so hard to make the UK car industry great again, don't throw away the jewel in the UK's manufacturing crown by tying our hands behind our back ... We need a Brexit deal that protects jobs and secures tariff free access and the frictionless trade which our car industry needs to go from strength to strength," Burke added.

In June 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Although Brexit is scheduled for March 2019, London and Brussels still cannot agree on a number of key issues, including the Irish border and the customs arrangements, making a no-deal scenario a possibility.
