Trump Urges US Senate To Vote On Supreme Court Pick After 'Powerful' Testimony

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th September, 2018) US President Donald Trump in a statement called on the Senate to vote for the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after his powerful testimony over sexual assault accusations.

Earlier in the day, testifying separately, Kavanaugh and his accuser Christine Blasey Ford gave emotional testimonies before a senate committee. Kavanaugh shouted at Democrats on the committee, accusing the lawmakers of trying to sabotage his nomination, and broke into tears while explaining how the allegations hurt his family.

"Judge Kavanaugh showed America exactly why I nominated him," Trump said via Twitter on Thursday. "His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting. Democrats' search and destroy strategy is disgraceful and this process has been a total sham and effort to delay, obstruct, and resist. The Senate must vote!"

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination on Friday unless the Republicans decide to postpone it in light of the hearing. US Senator John Cornyn told reporters after the testimony that the committee still plans to vote on Friday and is optimistic they will have enough votes to confirm Kavanagh.

Ford during testimony accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault while the two were in high school. In addition, two other women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. On Wednesday, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee in a letter called on Trump to withdraw Kavanagh's nomination for the Supreme Court until the FBI conducted a probe into the allegations.

Kavanaugh must be approved by the Senate before he can fill the one empty seat on the 9-member US Supreme Court.
