Burundi Seeks to Extend Energy Cooperation With Russia, Sign Gas Agreements - Ambassador

Burundi wishes to extend cooperation with Russia in the energy sector, including signing agreements between the two countries' gas industries in the near future, the ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to Russia, Edward Bizimana, told Sputnik on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th September, 2018) Burundi wishes to extend cooperation with Russia in the energy sector, including signing agreements between the two countries' gas industries in the near future, the ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to Russia, Edward Bizimana, told Sputnik on Thursday.

"Of course we are experiencing a lot of cooperation in the mining sector and I think we are looking forward to developing strategies, cooperation strategies in the sector of gas and other minerals in Burundi. The energy sector is one of the sectors which enjoys the support of both governments," Bizimana said.

The ambassador added that cooperation between Russia and Burundi has already been established in the mining sector and the impetus of cooperation will hopefully be applied in the gas sector in the future.

"I think that in the near future, I think agreements [on gas] will be signed but now is the starting point. The mining sector, the gold sector is already on track so we hope that the other sectors will follow and agreements will be signed," he said.

Bizimana noted that Burundi was open to Russian investors visiting the country, as there are a lot of opportunities for investment.

In late 2017, Russian-Burundian company Tanganyika Gold started work at the Chimba open cast mine in the Cibitoke province after an official launch by President Pierre Nkurunziza. The launch ceremony was attended by top Burundian officials and the Russian ambassador. The company planned to produce 50 tonnes of gold ore per hour.
