EALL calls for firm stance against Houthi threat to maritime navigation

The Emirates Association for Lawyers and Legal, EALL, called on the international community and relevant United Nations, UN, organisations to take immediate steps to confront the criminal practices of the Iranian-backed Houthi militias and their threat to maritime navigation in Yemen.

ABU DHABI, (Pakistan Point News - 26th Sep, 2018) The Emirates Association for Lawyers and Legal, EALL, called on the international community and relevant United Nations, UN, organisations to take immediate steps to confront the criminal practices of the Iranian-backed Houthi militias and their threat to maritime navigation in Yemen.

In statements to the Emirates news Agency, WAM, Zayed Al Shamsi, Chairman of the EALL, said that World Maritime Day, which will take place tomorrow, is an opportunity to call on international human rights and legal organisations to take a clear stance against the international violations of the militias.

He explained that the acts of the militias in the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait clearly violate international agreements related to international humanitarian law and maritime navigation, such as the "United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" and the "San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea."

He also highlighted the necessity of committing to the rules and principles of international humanitarian law during armed conflicts at sea, while pointing out that the Houthi militias have violated these clauses after they repeatedly announced their intention to transform sea routes in Yemen into war zones.

The smuggling of weapons through Yemen’s ports is a criminal act under international law, as well as the targeting of tankers, Al Shamsi said in conclusion.

In 2018, International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates 70 years since the Convention establishing the Organization was adopted.

The World Maritime Day theme for the year is "IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future".

This provides the opportunity to take stock and look back, but also to look forward, addressing current and future challenges for maritime transport to maintain a continued and strengthened contribution towards sustainable growth for all.
