OPCW Director-General Visits Algeria, Meets With Foreign Minister - Statement

Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fernando Arias met with Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and senior Algerian officials in Algiers on Tuesday, the OPCW press service said Wednesday in a statement.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fernando Arias met with Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and senior Algerian officials in Algiers on Tuesday, the OPCW press service said Wednesday in a statement.

"In his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director-General recognised the important role played by Algeria since the inception of the OPCW and its important contribution to peace and stability in the North Africa and Sahel region," the statement read.

The parties also vowed to continue cooperating in order to counter the threat of chemical weapons usage.

"After the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Director-General made a joint press appearance during which both sides pledged to continue to work together to address the threat posed by the use of chemical weapons while acknowledging the need to further enhance capacity-building, cooperation, and exchange in the field of the peaceful uses of chemicals," the statement added.

Arias also met separately with Algerian Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Noureddine Ayadi and head of the Algerian National Authority Maj. Gen. Djamel Gueroui, the press service said.
