The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier on Tuesday that the contact with the crew of the Russian Il-20 military aircraft had been lost late on Monday when the plane was over the Mediterranean Sea, some 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Syrian coast, on its way back to Russia's Hmeimim airbase.
According to the ministry, the plane vanished from radars during an attack of four Israeli F-16 jets on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia. In addition, the Russian radars registered missile launches from the French frigate Auvergne, which was in the area.
