UN Must Be Firmer in Bringing Houthis to Negotiating Table - Yemeni Foreign Minister

The United Nations must be firmer about bringing the Houthi delegation to the negotiating table on the Yemen conflict, Khaled Yamani, the foreign minister of Yemen, said at a press briefing in Geneva on Saturday.

GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th September, 2018) The United Nations must be firmer about bringing the Houthi delegation to the negotiating table on the Yemen conflict, Khaled Yamani, the foreign minister of Yemen, said at a press briefing in Geneva on Saturday.

On Wednesday, the Houthi delegation said that they would not attend the UN-mediated consultations in the Swiss city of Geneva with the Yemeni government, scheduled for Thursday. The delegation claimed that the Saudi-led coalition, which controls the Yemeni air space, did not guarantee them free passage, which the coalition denied. In spite of the absence of the Houthis, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, held informal consultations with the Yemeni government's delegation.

"The only way for a solution is the way of the UN. We want the UN to be firmer in bringing the other party to negotiations," Yamani said.

Yamani stated that the government was ready to support all efforts of the United Nations and Griffiths in reaching a peace settlement on Yemen.

Yemen is in a state of a civil war, with the government headed by Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi fighting the Houthi movement, with the help of the Saudi-led coalition that has been carrying out airstrikes targeted at the areas controlled by the Houthis since March 2015.
