Call for Ceasefire in Idlib Good But Truce Guarantors Cannot Speak for Terrorists - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that he agrees with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's proposal to declare a ceasefire in Syria's Idlib, but stressed that they cannot speak for militants and terrorists who are not present at the talks.

TEHRAN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that he agrees with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's proposal to declare a ceasefire in Syria's Idlib, but stressed that they cannot speak for militants and terrorists who are not present at the talks.

"There are no representatives of the armed opposition at the table and, moreover, of the Jabhat Nusra and Islamic State [terrorist groups both banned in Russia]. I believe that the Turkish president is generally right, it would be good. But we cannot say for them, and especially we cannot say for the Jabhat Nusra and IS terrorists that they will stop shooting or stop using drones with bombs," Putin said at the Russia-Iran-Turkey summit in Tehran during the discussion of the text of the final declaration.

He noted that the text was made very "diplomatic."

In turn, Erdogan said that the call to lay down weapons applied not only to Jabhat Nusra, but also to all others.

"At this summit, we are urging you that you must lay down weapons," Erdogan said.

Putin said that he supported this call.
