Russia to Respond Adequately If Google Continues to Break Russian Law - Lawmaker

Russia will respond adequately, and possibly not publicly, if Google continues to break Russian laws, Andrei Klimov, the head of the Federation Council's Committee on State Sovereignty Protection, told reporters on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th September, 2018) Russia will respond adequately, and possibly not publicly, if Google continues to break Russian laws, Andrei Klimov, the head of the Federation Council's Committee on State Sovereignty Protection, told reporters on Thursday.

The Russian Central Election Commission (CEC) said earlier this week it had sent a letter to Google regarding the upcoming regional elections warning against spreading appeals to take part in protests on the polling day.

"We are expecting that Google will take up the opportunity and will not carry out any illegal activities on the Russian territory ... [If the company continues to do so] other measures will follow, an adequate response, and not necessarily a public one," Klimov said.

The lawmaker expressed hope that the US-based company would respect Russian laws.

Klimov stressed that target-based content was being developed within a political ad campaign carried out in contravention of Russian legislation.

"It was done intentionally and by excellent specialists, such as in the Silicon Valley," Klimov said.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) said that Google has not responded to the letter from Russian authorities.
